Viseral reactions to images as a guide to home decorating

Do you ever catch a glimpse of an image and find yourself having a strong emotional response to it? It happened to me the other morning when I opened up the newspaper and glanced at one of the photographs. While I can't recall what the article was about, I do recall having an almost instantaneous feeling of peace and comfort. At that moment, I knew recreating that feeling should be something I seriously consider in my own home decor.

I once entered a tiny studio apartment in New York City filled with books. The owner, a retired English professor, had filled her home with the books on shelves, piled next to her rocking chair, and stacked on her coffee table. While visiting her, I commented on the coziness of her apartment and eagerly perused her shelves.

How did she create a home oasis in a small apartment in Manhattan? By filling her space, albeit small, with the things she loved.

Take a moment and think about what makes you feel at peace? Is there a friend's home that you love to visit? What items in your home make you happy? Whatever the current style or trend, filling your home with things you love and creating a feeling of peace and serenity never goes out of style.
