How Colors Affect Your Mood

Today I am thinking about the link between color and mood. Most of us have read that there is a psychology behind colors and the moods they elicit. Red dining rooms are said to energize, encourage conversation, and stimulate our appetites. For me red just seems too loud. Maybe images of formal dining rooms with red walls seems outdated...stuffy, boring. I'm not exactly sure. All I know is that I don't think I would like to have a red dining room. By the way, I know dining rooms don't have to be red, and that other warm colors such as orange or brown may suffice. The deeper question I have is: could it be possible that there might be a perfect color profile for me based on my own personality, culture, and even weaknesses? Whoa, that's pretty interesting right? Maybe my perfect color profile would stretch me outside of my color comfort zone and inject a little liveliness into my life. Could I feel better, more grounded, and more connected simply by changing the colors in my home?

While searching the internet I came upon an interesting article entitled, "The Psychology Behind Paint Colors" from Natural Solutions Magazine. In it the author writes about how interior designer and color consultant Debra A. Wilde created a Color Horoscope to help us understand more about the art of conscious color use. Ms. Wilde has written a book, "Colors Gone Wilde", which explores how colors can be personalized and used to promote well-being. For me, turquoise is one my favs. What does it tell me about myself or what I aspire to be? Insight, Progressive thinking, and healing. Pretty cool!

Viseral reactions to images as a guide to home decorating

Do you ever catch a glimpse of an image and find yourself having a strong emotional response to it? It happened to me the other morning when I opened up the newspaper and glanced at one of the photographs. While I can't recall what the article was about, I do recall having an almost instantaneous feeling of peace and comfort. At that moment, I knew recreating that feeling should be something I seriously consider in my own home decor.

I once entered a tiny studio apartment in New York City filled with books. The owner, a retired English professor, had filled her home with the books on shelves, piled next to her rocking chair, and stacked on her coffee table. While visiting her, I commented on the coziness of her apartment and eagerly perused her shelves.

How did she create a home oasis in a small apartment in Manhattan? By filling her space, albeit small, with the things she loved.

Take a moment and think about what makes you feel at peace? Is there a friend's home that you love to visit? What items in your home make you happy? Whatever the current style or trend, filling your home with things you love and creating a feeling of peace and serenity never goes out of style.

Home is where the hearth is

Welcome to my new blog about all things home related! My name is Liz and I love learning about the real estate market here in the Bay Area, home decorating, home staging, and what makes a house a home. Home is not only where the "hearth" is, but where your heart is. It is more than where we live, the things we own, and the color of the carpet, but the people we live with, and the way we live our lives. This is the REAL warming hearth of a home. So, join me and let's have some fun exploring this topic together.
